Horsin Around

Kenzie having fun on a friends horse up at Tyler Farm. I even got to ride it. But it was such a slow pokey horse it wasn't any fun.

Jon and the hosp.

Jon thought he was having a heart attack and went to the ER to get checked out. This happened about 2 weeks ago and he's perfectly alright. But this is a funny picture of his sympathetic brothers looking in on him. I think they were looking at funny videos to cheer him up. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong but said because he had ridden on a 6 hour bike ride the day before and a 5 hr. bike ride that day a little bit of enzymes could leak out of the heart to make it feel like and look like a heart attack. He's also been under stress from finals too. I think stress has so much to do with our health. I love to do yoga as my main exercise and I feel so much better and it's such a great stress reducer.

Choo-Choos

Carson is really into trains lately. Especially ones like Thomas the Train. We went to McCormick Railroad Park last night and waited in line for 1hr. and 15 min. in the cold to ride the
kiddie train. But it was so much fun and wasn't bad since we weren't the ones waiting in the long line. We got the fun job of taking Carson around looking at all the sights while Danny and Lachelle did the standing.
It cost $2.00 per person to ride and they pack them in about 100 people per train. Notice the one box car is called "Carson" and Colorado. The train goes around the park and they have alot of Christmas scenes all lit up. The ride takes about 5 min. from start to finish.
They also have toy trains that go around a track indoors with landscape scenery and little buildings.
Lots of animated characters walking around to keep the kids happy.
Carson was in Train Heaven.

Mesa Temple Christmas Lights 2010

Every year we visit the temple at Christmas to see the beautiful lights. This year we took some of Kenzie's non mormon friends to see the lights and met up with Ricks Singles Ward for their FHE night.
Here's a reflection in the pool of the temple.

Merry Christmas

Brother Bucky

Mel Bashore (I call him "Bucky") is always in some bicycle magazine or historical article. This week he was in the Church News. I just wanted to put this in my blog because I'm very proud of him. He's been the best brother.

Church News -Sat. Nov 27 2010

When Mel Bashore hired on with the Church History Department in 1975, "strictly tasked to create finding aids for research," he noticed a deficiency that he set about to correct. Now, 30 years later, a national historic trails association has honored Brother Bashore for the database he launched in that pre-Internet age and has built up over the years into a convenient, on-line resource.

"I would see people come into the library, and I estimate about a third of the people coming in were interested in that pioneer experience of their ancestors, and we had nothing, really, to help them," Brother Bashore reflected in a recent interview.

An old index created by the Church Historian's Office around the turn of the century was error-ridden and relied too much on secondary sources, Brother Bashore said. "For example, there's an entry in there that someone came in the '1847 Brigham Young handcart company.' Handcarts in '47? That's 10 years before they did come!

"So I really thought, with so many people coming to the library, we needed to do better, and this thing sort of grew over the years."

It's not just Church History Library patrons who have benefitted, nor is it strictly Latter-day Saints. This is evidenced by the Distinguished Service Award given Aug. 11 to Brother Bashore by the Oregon-California Trails Association.

As noted in the association's Fall 2010 newsletter, the Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel Database that Brother Bashore envisioned and coordinated is today "the most complete listing of Mormon pioneer emigrants and companies who traveled to Utah from 1847 through 1868. It indexes over 350 known emigrating companies, lists rosters for each company, provides excerpts from trail narratives, includes photographs of company captains and allows individuals to submit changes or additions."

Containing more than 50,000 emigrant names, the database provides full-text transcriptions of nearly 3,200 Mormon Trail narratives — diaries, recollections, correspondence and newspaper reports.

One obvious reason for the association's interest in the database is that the Mormon, Oregon and California trails coincide in some portions.

Mel Bashore, Church History Library historian, is shown in his office where he uses a vintage microfilm reader as well as modern computer technology. He compiled an extensive Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel Database.

"One of those parts goes right by our Martin's Cove," Brother Bashore said, referring to the site near present-day Alcova, Wyo., where members of the ill-fated Martin Handcart Company camped awaiting rescuers from Salt Lake City.

The respective trails "all sort of funnel in at that Sweetwater Valley area to a single trail," Brother Bashore said. "There are other parts in the beginning where they jump off at different locations. But for a good part of that section passing Independence Rock, Devil's Gate, right along through there, it's just a single trail."

Much of the shared interest comes from the fact that many Mormon trail diaries and other documents will mention non-Mormon companies and vice versa, he said.

As the database has grown over the years, technology has emerged to facilitate it.

Taking guidance from Perpetual Emigration Fund records, Brother Bashore began by systematically going through the Church History Department's archival collection, examining handwritten and published diaries and reminiscences, endeavoring to identify what traveling company a pioneer may have been part of and what ship he or she may have sailed on to come to the United States. The earliest product was simply a bibliography. It was the late 1980s, and personal computers were in their infancy, so the bibliography was produced in hard copy.

As computers became more sophisticated, missionary volunteers with the Church History Department began to load names into a spreadsheet initially and later a database.

Brother Bashore has found that rosters of ship passengers are generally complete, but not so with the overland companies. Only about a third of the companies that came to the Salt Lake Valley before the coming of the railroad in 1869 have complete rosters. Another third or so have partial listings.

"And then for a third, maybe 80-plus companies, we have no roster at all," he said. "So our first course of business was to create an index to those companies that we did have rosters for," Brother Bashore said. "Now, we're trying to add people to the database who we know came to Utah, either from a census or some other source, and we're trying to identify which year. We probably can't ever identify which company, but we add them to the database."

In many cases, the time period of an immigrant's arrival can be pinned down to a span of time, say, 1855-57.

It helps, of course, when members of the public contribute.

"Every diary adds new information," Brother Bashore said. "Every journey across the plains was unique. Everybody had different experiences, and these unique journals help us know the details of what happened in crossing the plains."

Occasionally, someone will deposit a new trail journal with the Church History Library. More often, users of the database will submit information online. Meanwhile the project keeps growing, in content and availability.

Typical is the experience of a Church News reporter who accessed the database at its website, Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel Database. Typing in the first and last name of his Mormon pioneer ancestor who immigrated from Sweden, the reporter found that the ancestor came to Utah in 1861 with the Samuel A. Woolley company. Clicking on the link for the Woolley company yielded the information that 338 individuals and 61 wagons were in the company. Further links took the user to an alphabetical listing of individuals in the company (including the ancestor's wife and two young children) and to a list of sources for more information about the company, including several diary excerpts.

"In doing genealogy, who would think to look at a trail journal for information?" Brother Bashore remarked. "But we're putting up very accurate information now, based on primary sources that we have here in the Church History Library."

Activity Day girls

It was my turn to lead Activity Day this month of November. It was a good time to go to the Temple Visitors Center and watch a movie and then we took some pictures and walked over to Dairy Queen to have our refreshments. Everyone had a good time.

The second activity was learning how to make rolls for Thanksgiving. Everyone wore their aprons they made the month before. We also went over good manners at the dinner table. It was another good activity that the girls enjoyed and the good thing is we were done in an hour.

Grandkids Grow Up

This is a picture of Maylee taken last week. She had a play date with her cousin Carson and the 2 grandmas (Me and Norma) took them to the Chandler Mall to get our walking exercise in. The kids were great, Carson was such a little man wanting to get out of the stroller and push it himself. He did pretty good. Pictured below is him eating a churro at the food court. Maylee is now 6 mo. old and Carson is 2 yrs. old. Maylee is sitting up on her own now and crawling everywhere. Carson's vocabulary is growing by leaps and bounds. I kidnapped him last week and he spent 6 days at our house. It was so much fun!

Shop Till You Drop

Here's my darling grandbaby "Maylee" we went shopping for the first time together at the Scottsdale Fashion Square. I had her all to myself and by the looks of it she was so excited. I hadn't been to Fashion Square for a long time and it is really different with a whole new parking garage and all new shops. Everyone was out with their babies in strollers. Everyone was looking at Maylee and smiling, I was such a proud Grandma. I've never heard her cry she is the calmest sweetest baby. Her favorite store was the Disney Store and I couldn't resist getting her Minnie and Mickey Mouse.
But as the saying goes "You Shop Till You Drop".

Crossing Borders

We spent Labor Day down at Rocky Point at Las Palomas, which are those high rises in the background. I was surprised how many people there were. All the other times besides spring break there has been no one on the beach. The weather was in the 90's and very nice at night.
Jon rented a Rhino and took everyone for scary rides up and down the sand dunes. We were shopping and he just drove up and found us. The girls had a fun ride.
This is baby maylee enjoying her first pool swim and it's in Mexico!! She just liked chillin.
Here's Mackenzie, Derek, Michael and Michelle all enjoying a Virgin Pina Colada by the pool.
We always have fun shopping for bargains in town and trying on crazy hats.

Hacked Into

My old hotmail email account was hacked into yesterday and all my contacts were sent this
crazy email. I had about 10 people call me starting at 7:30 a.m. to ask if I was alright. One
friend who was really concerned wrote back to them and wondered how she could help. They
wrote back and wanted her to send them $1,500 and they signed it "Lisa". Michael said that
he heard about this bogus email on MSN news. I'm so sorry everyone who got this email. Please
block my hotmail account on your emails. I am with gmail now. I love gmail. Hope it doesn't get hacked into.

Activity Day Girls Recognition Night

"Bloom Where Your Planted" was our theme for the recognition night. I'm one of three other leaders on the "Dream Team" for the activity day girls. Each of us are incharge of a month to
come up with activities for the girls. Which is great, but my month was the recognition night and
I had to come up with the ideas. So I used my Blog logo, Bloom where your Planted and the rest was easy. Heather made these fantastic invitations.

Karen made special flower cupcakes for the girls used with gum drops flattened and them cut to the shape of a flower. I made the rest of the cupcakes for everyone else with just frosting on top.

Louisa let us borrow the cute flowers to hang along with the girls tissue paper flowers that were spread all around.
Gail came up with cute programs and certificates to hand out to the girls along with a DVD of
all the pictures we took of the girls activities. I took pictures of flowers at the temple and entered them into the video with pictures of the Mesa Temple and visitor center paintings along
with music it turned out really nice. About 9 min. long we watched it after the girls sang, "If The Savior Stood Beside Me." Then Bro. Deron ( 2nd counselor in Bishopric) talked about the Faith in God Book and likened their testimony to a Bamboo Bush and how it stays under the ground for 5 years and then shoots up 60 ft in 6 weeks. He did a great job.

The girls displayed some the things they have been working on all year/ Everyone had a great time. I think the girls need to have a talent show. They are really talented!!!The girls made tissue paper flowers the week before to decorate the R.S. Room. They helped clean up by taking them home. JoAnn's had a big package of tissue paper for $10.00 and then with the coupon they were about $6.00. The whole activity cost about $30.00

Married 67 years

Mom and Dad's anniversay was today....married 67 years. They are a very special couple. My Dad pretty much dedicated his whole life into serving my mom. I am very lucky to have them as parents. They still care and watch out for each other. . . I'm so glad they are living close to me where we can have them over for dinner each Sunday.
